The April/May 2013 edition of Asimov’s is available with my story “Gray Wings.” This is my first sale to Asimov’s, but Sheila Williams (their editor) has sent me some really glowing and encouraging rejections over the years.
I don’t think this story will get much of an enthusiastic reaction among reviewers. It’s low-key, understated, doesn’t take any risks, and doesn’t really say much that isn’t obvious or even trite. But I like it, even if I have trouble articulating why I like it. Maybe because — for me anyway — it does a powerful job of conveying its main character’s mood and feelings.
Now that I’ve said all that, maybe (if the fates are sufficiently perverse) this will go on to be my most successful and acclaimed story ever.
Update: My prophesy was pretty much correct; “Gray Wings” made it into The Year’s Best Science Fiction for 2013.
